Dagger Assassin

A not-very-detailed article about being a DagSin.

NOTE: (11-13-2018) This article is one year old and a lot has changed since I left ROM CN. I am currently playing in ROM SEA and if I find time to update this article with the latest information on how to maximize being a dagger sinx, then I will. Thank you!

This build is based on the Double Attack and Double Blade skills. Double Blade (or Piercing Blades) is a dagger-type only skill that gives 25% chance to reduce physical defense by 50% for 4 seconds. The duration overlaps so having a good attack speed makes it trigger nicely as if the effect doesn't go away.

Aside from the fact that the equipment of this type is cheaper than katar types, the recent update gave a whopping 40% additional damage to DA, thanks to the guild runes. Yes, I know, its a bit expensive if you calculate for the items you'll need to contribute to get the right runes but let me tell you, it's all worth it when you achieve that 40% additional damage to Double Attack. And, please take note that the usual items requested as guild contribution can be looted while grinding or can be bought from NPCs. Except for the miniboss/mvp items, of course, getting those medals are like exchanging your loots directly for power.

Lets discuss where this type of Sinx gets its power..

First of all, Stats. Since you don't have to invest on LUK, the only stats you'll need to fill in are STR and AGI. In the end game, if Level 99 is released, you can achieve STR99 and AGI99. With that, you can choose your equipment to either add more damage or increase your ASPD to the max (480%).

Equipment. The arsenal for DagSins are cheap. Below are the items that would most likely extract the raw power needed for daggers:

Weapon: Tier 3 Ebone Dagger [2] (Pront dagger)

EDIT (Sept 28, 2018): there was an update (episode 2 or 3, I guess?) for the equipment lines with HolyDagger that gave them massive amount of stats. The upgrades required somewhat rare items such as MVP items but all of them can be farmed or purchased from the auction. So, this means a Tier 3 Ebone dagger is now inferior to an upgrade HolyDagger. But still, while going for that upgrade, a tier 3 Ebone is still useful while collecting the needed items for the HolyDagger upgrade. Again, what you read next is not all correct but may still be useful so I'm not removing it.

- compared to a HolyDagger which is the final tier of this weapon, its cheaper to slot this one. The additional slot would give way to either race damage, elemental damage or other subsidiary functions through cards like auto-regen 30 sp (magnolia card, for unli EDP or SB) or auto-SB (injustice card). Why go injustice? The card is cheap and triggers nicely if you have enough (or max) attack speed. Remember, you'd only have to focus on STR and AGI, so 480 ASPD is possible. Not to mention that this dagger (ebone), would only require 90 STR points (total) to give you an additional 15% PATK if it reaches tier 3. In HolyDagger, you'll have to reach 120 STR just to get that 15% physical attack bonus or 150 STR for the 20%. Not to mention that  HolyDagger has that ability to add 30 ATK by chance which can be stacked up to 3x, having a total of 90 ATK but the additional slot in ebone makes up for the lost PATK chances. This has been proven effective by Heridl, who is currently the God of Daggers in discord. He currently uses this dagger with two Dessert Wolf cards and he can out-damage crits made by high-level crit sins in GH.

UPDATE: Heirdl now uses Twilight tier 2 [2] with 2 Minorus cards (explined below).

Why dessert wolf card? It gives you 25% more damage to small-size monster. Now you might be wondering, why wouldn't you choose Mino card which gives 25% to large.. right? Well, that's the first option. Since it's so expensive, you will opt to increase your damage on the category that you already have 100% damage instead of compensating that 50% penalty on large-size monster. Heridl is currently using a Tier 2 Twilight [2] with 2 Minorus cards. Why tier 2 only? Because Twilight already gives 25% damage to large and making it tier 2 will give another 5% making it 30%. Now, add the 2 Minorus cards, the item itself has a total of 80% to large. Now if you do the math, 50% penalty is already cancelled by this item plus you get a 30% additional damage to large monsters. This is preferable for boss hunts (BH) since majority of MVPs are large size which is actually his, and everyone else's target.

Now, you see the technicality of the DagSin build. You can read more below about the equipment set for this build if you are still leaning towards building one.

Off-Hand: Rose Princess Bracer
- this item gives 'ignore 25% defense'. So, to add it to your Double Blade Force skill, you have -75% physical defense. You can opt to slot this but it is all up to you. You might be wondering if you can opt for the tier 3 too but, 25% is achieved only on the final tier, which is this item. (from Bloody Floral Bracelet).

Armor: Tier 3 Tights or Grand Thief Clothes
+15 Ninja Suit II is the ultimate armor for all types of Assassins IMHO. but if its not +15, you're better off using tights or grand thief clothes (GTC) if you're a DagSin.

Tier 3 Tights gives you all the goodies like 8% physical attack just like Mountain Ranger tights but assassins don't really need the last ability which is 'increase the affection of INT on Falcon Damage' since we don't have that and, Mountain Ranger tights can only be equipped by the sniper class.

Now, to compare this with GTC is a long-discussion but we at the thief channel always comes to an agreement that its only a matter of preference. GTC gives you +10 STR, +5 Agi and MDEF 20 which would really help if you want to reach 150 STR for the 20% physical attack bonus from HolyDagger.

Garment: Ancient Cape or Rider Insignia
- ancient cape will give you an additional -15% pdef, added to your Double Blade Force skill that gives -50% pdef (25% chance) and your off-hand (-25% pdef), you will have -90% ignore pdef. Let that sink in.
- now, Heridl opted to use Rider Insignia because it gives 20 Crit Shield. this is important since some mobs (like deviruchi) do Crit Damages and having 20 Crit Shield helps a lot with that. Not to mention that if you pair this with Rider Shoes, you will get a bonus +15 Flee.

Shoes: Feral Boots or Rider Boots or Geffen Boots
- Feral Boots, because they are cheap and it gives +2 agi aside from the 5% movement (which, most of the shoes does)
- Rider Boots if you're going for the Rider Insignia (+15 flee, if paired)
- Geffen Boots, cheap to slot, and makes unli EDP possible. This is the current item that I use, which has an Eggyra card on it. Eggyra card gives INT+2 and SP Recov +5. Assassins have nothing to do with INT, we usually have 0. By default, no matter what you do, a sinx would end up with 400+ SP and that, gives us 4~5 SP recovered every 8 seconds when attacking (4 seconds when sitting). Add that up with the Geffen Shoes and Eggyra card, you should end up with 13~14 Sp recov, enough to cycle and give you unli EDP since EDP cooldown is 40 seconds. Do the math and you'll see, after the cooldown of EDP, you'll have enough Sp to cast it again.

Accessories: Tier 3 Flower Rings [1] or Matyr's Leash [1]
- Matyr's leash scales nicely when refined compared to Flower rings. it means, a +7 matyr's leash gives more ATK than a +10 Flower ring. (sorry, no exact detail but a lot has proven this, that's why chinese players have matyrs leash on them)
- its a must to put a Greatest General Card on one of the accessories for Dagsins. its 3% chance to add 10% damage on final damage for 60 seconds. Final damage means, the 10% is added to the damage you make after your atk calculation is calculated versus your opponent's defense.

    1. Put 30 dex so you can hit them

      Delete
    2. To be honest I didn't think much about dex until I arrived at GH and I was unable to hit anolians. 30 Dex is not enough to hit them and I wasn't willing to add more. So, instead of dealing with anolians, I focused on hitting small-sized enemies instead - Bapho Jr.s and Cramps. With them, I didn't even need a single dex.\

But with PVP, 30 dex should be fine. Just expect that you are most likely to miss on AGI-based classes such as gx, adl sc,s snipers, etc.

    3. Nope, not even a single hit to another sinx or Agi based char. Note that. Dagger build is useless in PVP unless u have Decent HIT which require dex or hit item or card

  6. i have a few qns, if a dagsin is equipped with
    1) rose princess bracelet 25% ignore def
    2)ancient cape 15% ignore def
    3)Twinblade penetration skill 50%
    Total : 90%
Do we still need to Deposit Mino card for the addtional 50%? i've seen many sins on youtube has done that, 3 mino cards.

which leads to my next qns on Twinblade Penetration, Description mention REDUCED 50% damage and not Ignore.
    theoretically speaking,
    Eg. 1000 Def . Reduced 50% = 500 > ignore 45% (rose princess + ancient cape )
    500-225 = 275 def Remaining .

    1. Answers:
      1. The reason behind the infamous 3 mino card combo is because of the bonus we get when storing a mino card in the album - 'additional damage to large monsters if additional damage to large monsters is 51% and up'. This means, it will only be activated if the total 'additional damage to large monsters' bonus (either from a skill or a card) is 51% and up.
-also, the bonus that the mino card gives (or other size penalty bonus cards) is not related to ignore def. Mino card reduces the size penalty when using daggers (only 50% to Large). So, using 3 mino card combo compliments this penalty.

      2. The -def bonuses, may it be from an item or from a skill, does not calculate like how we normally think they would. This is because some -def attributes only apply to equipment def and some apply to def from stats (VIT). And then, there's refined DEF. Some would call it hard and soft def. I'm not saying that your calculation here is wrong, it is correct. I just wanted to point this out for the other players who are not aware. And I hope, this would somehow answer your 'real' question 'why does the damage reduction calculation doesn't make sense in this game?'

    2. Thankyou for your response.

I believe the description and Calculations are abit confusing to many players, so for people like me which wants the BIS Equipments have to crack their head. For example, u mentioned mino card Deposit stat is to compliment the penalty for using daggers, but from the description from the card itself it mention ( Ignore Monsters 50% multiplied def) which is.. right and wrong.

Suggestion : Since you're so well versed with Dagsin, you should come out with a guide on Guild Runes.
Many players have no idea which runes to add first for the optimal dps/ phrase / skills / pre-poison pitcher route.
      Ranking on skills,
      Double atk
      TwinBlade Penetration
      poison Pitcher
      poison ++
      crit dmg
      etc etc

    3. Oh, boy! AGREED! I do have a draft about the rune guide but damn I really can't find the time to finish it!

And YES, the descriptions on ROM SEA is a little bit confusing especially if you didn't play ROM CN - so I agree with you. I'll be more specific when I fix this article. (when? I don't know.)

Thank you for the suggestion! Very much appreciated!

    2. Can you try it on a Minorous or any other monster that is sized Large? Try it without the cards, then with the cards.

I was thinking, you might be testing it on a medium or small sized monster - the minorous effects (card album and card effect itself) only applies to Large monsters. So, maybe that's the reason why you are not seeing the difference?

Furthermore, please mind that the aesthetic or physical appearance of monsters does not exactly mean their size - you must check their information via the adventurer book to confirm if this.

And also.... do you use Sonic Blow? and is the passive from it's advanced state worth it? (30 hit)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, DA is the main source of damage PVE-wise. but for WOE or PVP, sonic blow is your main weapon.

And yes, we use sonic blow. The passive skill for it named "Sonic Acceleration" does not only add 30 hit to your stats, it also increases Sonic Blow's damage twice!

I believe the description says something like: "increase sonic blow damage to 100%" and it doesnt mean it 'adds' 100% more damage to Sonic Blow lvl10's 700% damage to make it 800%, it adds 100% FINAL damage to sonic blow, basically making it twice as strong.

  12. @neversolo Hey there. Such an amazing in-depth guide you have here. Can't give you enough credit for all the insight you've given to fellow sins.

If I may ask, how does crit work on a Dagsin? Is it that DA is prioritised and any attack that does not trigger DA would only then have the chance to crit? Or does crit actually share equal priority which is bad since it may diminish the chance of triggering DA even if a Dagsin has some amount of crit rate.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well I wouldn't say 'prioritized'. As far as I know, regardless of ability (crit, DA, skill chance, etc) they all have equal priority on a given instance (per hit). but since they all have different proc rates, the ability with the highest chance would be the one most likely to trigger and if not, thats the only chance the other abilities would trigger.

So, it is obvious that a DagSin's DA whos chances is 50% per instance, would trigger more than a critical strike if, in most cases, his Crit rate is low.

But what would be interesting is; what if a DagSin equips himself with items that have crit enhancements, inlaid with crit cards (like kobold on acce), and has 50 LUK? If this is the case, I'm sure we would see DA and Crit proc evenly.

      Delete
    2. I see, sounds about right. Yes I find it interesting how the distribution between DA proc rate and crit rate might affect one's DPS hence the question. Perhaps putting points into Assassin Heart and Halo may be able to improve a DagSin's DPS.

    3. @Helios sir if you get the chance to create a Crit Dagger Sin, please let me see. It would be an interesting feat.

Saint dagger vs Holy Dagger vs Sandstorm dagger. Whats your thought on this?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Saint dagger is only good until you get your hands on top-tier items such as Holy Dagger Max tier. Holy Dagger would be better if you have the right cards (Mino) on it. If you don't have a mino card yet, you can opt for the sandstorm (2) with the correct elemental card in it (i.e Menblatt for Earth monsters)

      Delete
    2. So holy do is better than sand storm assuming both are carded the same?

Thanks for reading my blog. ;)

Anyways, I'm sorry I call them Geffen shoes but they are actually called 'Shoes'. They have Sp regen + 5 and Max SP +75 (I think?). They can be crafted from Geffen, that's why I call them Geffen shoes. lol

About the daggers - I haven't used Bazerald. twilight makes Sandstorm. Holy Dagger is much preferred because it does not only give high ATK when in max tier, it also has properties that add ATK% when your STR reaches 95, 120 and 150. ATK% is better since it will give you more ATK if your have more since it takes a percentage of your base ATK and add it.

I am confused with the dagger choice between holy dagger and twilight/sandstorm.
I've read that holy dagger is for all-around and sandstorm is for mvp. Currently, I use twilight but I feel lacking of damage. after reading your replay, so the best dagger is holy dagger for now?

    3. Yes. If you can, use holydagger and see the difference. HolyDagger also has an ability that adds +30 ATK when doing normal attacks. This can stack 3x - means it will add a total of +90 ATK.

In other words, Which one would have more damage for large size?

    1. Hi there!

No, the roman numeral behind the Holday Dagger and Thief Clothes (VII) refers to it's 'tier' - well atleast, this is the term we refer it to.

If you'd scroll down the description of HolyDagger, you'd notice the roman numerals and their respective bonuses. You 'upgrade' the 'tier' of the said item and get the bonuses. This is not the refinement that you refer to - not the '+8' in front of the item.

I can't explain it more. Haha! But if you'd check, you'll see what I mean.

  27. I want to ask abount Dagger VS Dagger
    1. For PVP and Guild War Which one is better ? (Is it Katar cuz it's 100% dmg for mid size and Crit ignore def. right?)
    2. For Boss hunt which is better ? (Most boss is large size so assume if i have one good Sandstrom or Holy Dagger with 2 Minorus. Is Katar better cuz 75% to Large size and Crit Ignore def ?)
    3. Why everyone say dagger build is cheaper if u have to make 2 daggers (1 for Boss hunt/Large size, 1 for normal farming.)
    4. If i want to go for Katar how much crit rate without food buff do i need? Do i have to make it 80 for good crit build?
If that the case how much harder than Dagger build to make it work.

I know dagger is better for pre-SinX(with decent Job level) but now im 76 base and 21jobs now. I need more compare information for desiding which why i will go. I could't find much about comparing Dagger vs Katar online so i deside to ask here.

  28. Greetings! Whats your opinion in regards to SB's ASPD? If I'm using dagger, what ASPD should I achieve to out-DPS SB? Same goes for katar/crits. Thanks in advance!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello,

Thanks for reading my blog! Sorry for the late response..

I don't think SB really does have an ASPD but if you are talking about the actual speed of how sonic blow hits - which is about 2.5~ seconds - then I think it is impossible to 'out-hit' sonic blow.

Why? Sonic blow, together with Sonic Acceleration, does 1800% of your ATK dmg. In simpler terms, it is 18x your ATK dmg in just 2.5~ seconds. Now, to out-hit sonic blow by just using a normal attack (may it be double-attack or Critical Hits) then you should hit the monster 18x in less than 2 seconds - which is impossible even if you have max attack speed (480). Even if your attack is a Critical hit or a double attack, you should hit the monster 9x in that 2 second-mark.

However, if you use slash, then it might be possible - but then again, using it will not actually be out-hitting sonic blow but rather replacing it with another skill. This is imperative if your goal is to totally omit the use of any active skills.

My opinion on this, if you want the amplified damage of SB without the actual usage then just use an Injustice card. Gives you chance to use Sonic Blow while doing normal attacks.

      Delete
    2. Thanks for your reply! If that being said, wouldn't it be wise to only use SB for every possible situation? Since it will always produce the highest DPS possible?

      Delete
    3. Not really. Again, you'd have to overcome the shortage of SP whenever you afk-grind. If you are manually grinding, and you can pots ur SP whenever the need to, then yes - you can use SB all the way.

      Delete
    4. one more thing - you'd have to consider the efficiency of skills. If using SB is an overkill for the mob that you can kill with just 2-3 normal hits then using the SP is just a waste of pots. So I guess, it still depends on the situation.

  29. If I buy Fullback dagger [2] and just do the first upgrade (atk+70) will I lose the extra slot?

    1. Hello! Sorry for the late response.

No, you're all good. BUT, instead of buying that 2 slot dagger, why not craft one? It can be slotted in Geffen using 10pcs Fullback Dagger and 10k zennies. So if you have 1 fullback dagger and a lot of jellopies and Irons in your stash, go ahead and just craft 10 more Fullback Dagger and go to geffen to slot it. Heck, you can even invest in having it over ups (+10) before you slot it. It's all going to be fine.

  30. Regarding: Desert Twilight II + x2 Mino. Would an Expert Precision Stone stack? to cancel out the size penalty. Thanks

    2. Hi Kendro IMHO, i think 2 mino cards will stack with expert precision. Why? because expert precision is only 100% size correction which will make your damage to large size monster 100%. While description of minorous card is +25% damage to large monster. So if you have expert precision stone + 2 minourous = 150% damage to large monsters. Thanks me later.

    1. For me if you dont have enough str to reach 150 str when using holy dagger use thief clothes. And if ur using desert twilight/sandstorm as weapon use tights

  32. Thanks for an awesome answer sir riokki. I think the combi of holy dagg+thief clothes may absolutely boost the damage depending on the size of monsters. Coz i was thinking to use holy dagg+tights coz i want the attack stats and much cheaper to use.

    1. Use Grand Thief clothes if you have money. make it to final tier. Only use tights if you have a tight budget.

However, the good thing about tights is that you can easily slot it and slap a whisper card or a argiope card on it.

  33. Have you tried using Venom Daggers?
Is there any benefit in using this?

I recently upgraded it to Tier IV to get that Auto-Venom Knife (which procs horribly, but makes my attack 10x)
I can't afford to sell it as no one would really by it I feel I'm already accustomed to hits quirks too much.

    What do you think?

    2. For me, Ivy dagger is useful for PVE only but not MVPs or minis since they are immune to any status effects. I wouldn't really recommend using it on PVP too because if you want to inflict poison on anyone (even in woe) you'd be better off using Posion kunai (forgot the real name) or poison pitcher (poison fog in SEA). Poison kunai inflicts poison 100% (if it hits) - downside is it can be healed by panacea. And poison pitcher increases dmg to affected opponents since it drops defense significantly.

  34. i think venom dagger upgraded to level IV has a bug, i never got the chance to trigger the bonus auto-venom knife..also other bonus chance like high chance to poison, venom dagger damage, not sure about venom knife damage..
